CLOSE LOST HIS LIFE While Swimming in the Tioga River Thursday Afternoon Merritt B. Close, aged 27 years, promenient Tioga resident, was drowned in the Tioga River when he and a companion went for a swim after haying at the Close Farm Thursday about 3 p.m. Mr. Close accompanied by Oscar Smith, of Nelson, went to the river near Beeman, about three miles north of Tioga. When Mr. Close did not come up after a dive, Mr. Smith unable to recover the body, sent for help, which did not arrive for about an hour. The body was recovered by Leon Woods and Walter Hughes, of Tioga. The Corning Glass Works pulmotor after making a trip of 19 miles in 17 minutes, but although it was used for over a hour, Mr. Close could not be revived. The body was removed to the home of Close's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Close of Tioga. Survivors include the parents, two children, a brother, Reuben and a sister, Alice Close of Tioga. Mr. Close was a graduate of the Tioga High School and had many friends. |
