Note: For a time James farmed with his brothers William and Jarvis at Chapel House. In 1822 he married Elizabeth Hall of Potts and they moved to Smardale Hall at around 1832 where he became a well-known breeder of Premium Bulls for which he won many prizes. For a time James farmed with his brothers William and Jarvis at Chapel House. In 1822 he married Elizabeth Hall of Potts and they moved to Smardale Hall at around 1832 where he became a well-known breeder of Premium Bulls for which he won many prizes. His sons were also farmers: William at Potts, which had been his maternal grandparents farm. Jarvis farmed at Winton The youngest son James farmed first at Lingstubbs near Penrith, then at Holmescales near Kendal. The Penrith Observer for 29th August 1876 gives a long account of the farming methods he used in rearing his herd of Pedigree Cattle. In 1887 James moved his herd from Holmescales to Carperby in Wensleydale, Yorkshire. His cousin Maria Barker lived there with her husband Thomas Willis who was a well known sheep and cattle breeder. James was also a veterinary "quack" of considerable local renown for practising homoeopathy on animals. |

For a time James farmed with his brothers William and Jarvis at Chapel House. In 1822 he married Elizabeth Hall of Potts and they moved to Smardale Hall at around 1832 where he became a well-known breeder of Premium Bulls for which he won many prizes. His sons were also farmers: William at Potts, which had been his maternal grandparents farm. Jarvis farmed at Winton The youngest son James farmed first at Lingstubbs near Penrith, then at Holmescales near Kendal.
