Note: Leicestershire Mercury - Saturday 1 September 1860 Leicestershire Mercury - Saturday 1 September 1860 On Saturday an inquest was held at Glenfield upon Frederick Clowes deceased. It appeared that he was about eighteen years of age and came from Countesthorpe, last Michaelmas into the service of Mr Samuel Pickford, innkeeper and occupier of the wharf at the Glenfield railway station. On Saturday morning the deceased was told to assist in shunting some wagons. Four were standing upon a siding and another loaded with stone was being brought from a distance of about forty yards to be attached to them, by a man named Robert Brewin. Deceased went before to unhook the horses, having got on the wrong side of the chain, failed in doing so and attempting to pass out just before the buffers came together he was caught by them about the chest. The wagon rebounded and separated from the others, and deceased dropped to the ground. He was carried to the office, but died almost immediately. He would have been quite safe if he had stood still between the wagons and had often unhooked the horses before properly. The jury returned a verdict of ôAccidental Deathö and recommended that an older and more experienced man should be employed to do the unhooking. |
