Note: John and Ann Close lived at Ribba Hall with their 8 children, Septimus being the eight child but 7th son. John and Ann Close lived at Ribba Hall with their 8 children, Septimus being the eight child but 7th son. When they lived there they renamed it Ribba Hill, it was Ribba Hall before and is again now (why the name was changed from Ribba is a mystery). Ann Tennant has long links with the area and her family were very well off, landed farmers in the area for a long time. Heaning, the farm where she was born, has changed little since then. It appears that Heaning Hall and Farm were split before the Tennants had it and again after, but at the time they had it all as one house. They farmed between 160 and 180 acres at Heaning (Tennants) and around 98 - 120 acres at Ribba (Close). At the time it was possible to farm as little as 7 acres and make a living so they were fairly well to do! Ann's father Bernard was born at Forelands in West Burton / Walden which again is a large farm with a large house. There appears to have been no Close or Longstaff at Ribba between 1841 and 1891. Many thanks to Emma Guy for the history and the photographs. |
