The Penrith Observer, Tuesday July 30 1912 (page 3):

Death of Mr. Jarvis Close, Kirkby Stephen

A worthy and typical representative of an old and influential Methodist family passed away at Kirkby Stephen on Thursday, in the person of Mr. Jarvis Close, aged 78 years. The deceased gentleman had been in failing health during recent years, and, while his activities in church matters were necessarily restricted on that account his interest in and concern for the cause he loved so well showed not the slightest evidence of abatement. He was a son of the late Mr. James Close, who for many years farmed Smardale Hall under the Wakefield family, and on his retirement Mr. Jarvis Close continued the tenancy until about 18 years ago. Then he resided upon his own farm at Winton for a time, and subsequently retired to South End Villa, Kirkby Stephen, with Mrs. Close and their younger daughter, Miss Tamar Close. The elder daughter (nee Miss Lizzie Close) is now the wife of the Rev. T. Dargue, the well-known Wesleyan minister and missioner.

The deceased and Mrs Close had the great grief of losing their only son, John James, while he was a boy. The DeceasedÆs connection with Wesleyan Methodism covered practically the whole period of his lifetime. He was a local preacher for 58 years and naturally one of the oldest on the plan. On four occasions he served his church as circuit steward, the full term amounting approximately to 20 years.

He was held in high esteem for his exemplary Christian character, and in religious matters he acted as a friend and counsellor to many who sought his advice.

He was the friend of all and the enemy of none.
