Her uncle William Close was the tenant of White House Farm at Crosby Garrett. When he died the tenancy passed to Mary his niece and her husband John Baker.

Husband John was away from home, a visitor at Mill Rigg, Culgaith, Cumberland in the home of John Lancaster, 35, Farmer & Miller [not known to be related]. Mary is classed as the Head of the household.

Died of Cancer of the Breast and Bronchitis.

Her cousin John Close, the eccentric self styled ôPoetö Close, wrote the following in his æöMemorials of the DeadöÆ of that year.

At Crosby-Garrett, on July 10th, 1871, MARY, the beloved Wife of John Barker, Farmer, Aged 68 Years.

The monumental inscription at St AndrewÆs Church reads:

In Loving Memory of Mary wife of John Barker of Crosby Garrett died July 10th 1871 aged 66

Also of the above named John Barker died Feb. 13th 1881 aged 77
