Note: Jarvis and his wife Elizabeth Harker had two children; John born at Dyke Heads in 1816 and Ann born at Crosby Garrett in 1819 and baptised at Gunnerside Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. Jarvis and his wife Elizabeth Harker had two children; John born at Dyke Heads in 1816 and Ann born at Crosby Garrett in 1819 and baptised at Gunnerside Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. For a time they lived at Chapel House, Crosby Garrett and then moved to Enterbar near Kirkby Stephen. A butcher by trade, Jarvis sold his meat at the markets at Kirkby Stephen, Brough and Appleby. His spare time was devoted to the cause of Methodism. In 1814 he had been a Class Leader at Gunnerside Methodist Chapel and now had become a preacher in the Methodist Circuit. Each Sunday he rode his horse to wherever he was preaching and at other times was trying to raise money for the building of chapels. His son John ôPoetö Close wrote of him in one of his books û ôFor twenty years we went to three markets weekly. Our poor father toiled hard for six days, on the seventh he mounted his fat pony or gig; begged gold and helped to build many chapels; kept a swarm of poor relations, then at 65, God called Old Jarvis home, .nay, no longer poor but rich leaving above ú1,000 to a son and daughter, but that son, had he served God as faithfully as did his father, that son your Poet, had not fallen into the meshes of the law, nor been striped of his propertyö |
